“I started this piece two years ago to fill time between projects and to start exploring art for myself alone.
I wanted to remove the pressure of a client, a gift, a deadline.
I wanted to paint with no expectations, just for fun.
I wanted to see if I could ever feel like a painting was truly ‘perfect’ or ‘finished’.
(Two years later I have come to the conclusion that no that never happens, but you come to a point where the imperfections become a part of the painting in a beautiful way and you love every part of it).
The reference photo was taken one slow morning, whilst having breakfast with my sister. The location means so much to me, as well as the elements that make the photo.
For example, the teacup and saucer are from my parent’s wedding.
The eggs are from a farm near my godparent’s house which we’ve eaten since I was a child.
In the teapot’s reflection you can see parts of a garden which will always have a special place in my heart.
This breakfast reminds me, like the act of painting it, to take time for myself and savour the present moment with no expectations or pressure (something I often forget).
For this reason I’ve called this piece ‘Le temps d’une pause’ (A moment in time).
The first painting I ever made myself, a pure act of self love. My favourite gift I’ve ever given/received.
